Distinguished and Famous people from Birchip

Birchip's notable stories include an apprentice jockey who upset the Melbourne Cup field and a farmer who helped build practical agricultural research. Both grew from local beginnings, with achievements reaching well beyond the town.

🏇 Ray Neville

Ray Neville was the fifteen-year-old apprentice from Birchip who rode Rimfire to victory in the 1948 Melbourne Cup. Horse and rider started at 80–1, and the close finish was the first Melbourne Cup decided with photo-finish technology. In 2026, silo artwork by Kyle Torney brought the story onto a much larger local canvas. Family accounts remember Neville as modest about his fame, valuing his family life alongside the race that made his name.

🌾 Ian McClelland

Ian McClelland attended Birchip's primary and high schools before further education and agricultural study in Melbourne. He returned to the family farm and became one of the founders of Birchip Cropping Group. The organisation connected farmers with practical trials and research to improve their decisions. He received the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2008 for services to agriculture and innovative land management. Its account of his work recalls him studying members' feedback even during beach holidays: a persistent interest in making the research useful.
